How to export Internet Explorer 7 Search Providers list to a REG file

Question

I have many specialized search providers. I was wondering if there is a way or tool or add-on available that will allow me to export my user generated search providers to share with others, or migrate to another PC in my workgroup? It can get time consuming recreating these search providers.

Answer

The list of search providers are stored in the registry. To export the search providers list, use these steps:

  • Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following branch:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ SearchScopes

  • From the File menu, click Export and export the branch to a .REG file
  • Exit the Registry Editor.

Alternately, you can use the following command to export the above branch:

REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes" C:\SearchProviders.reg

The file SearchProviders.reg is now created on the C:\ drive. (Change the destination path if you want.) To apply the settings to another system, transfer this REG file to that system, and double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry.
